The mocking nickname "Hankel" for Herrstein's residents derives from the formerly common first name Johann-Karl, which was shortened to Hankel. While the people of Herrstein associate the term with self-confident and educated citizens, neighboring communities view it critically, which is also reflected in the "Hankel Fountain": An adult figure depicted as "Hankel" is being teased by a boy and splashed with water.

This fountain is intended to illustrate the curmudgeonry that is mockingly ascribed to the Herrstein residents in the surrounding villages. The nickname "Hankel" arose from the contraction of the former double given name Johann-Karl. It aims at the representative of the provincial bourgeoisie, who typically appears to be conceited or narrow-minded.

At the so-called "Hankelbrunnen" in Herrstein, the adult figure represents the "Hankel". That the "Hankel" was often exposed to the teasing of his surroundings is symbolized by the boy who sprinkled him with water. The figures of the fountain were based on an idea of the mayor Wolfgang Hey created by the artist Hans-Ulrich Pauly (Veitsrodt) and cast in mind by the Rincker art foundry.
