    The stone carving below the cafe lawn is a map of the Peak District National Park. The millstone under the yew trees through the small gate recognises the huge contribution given to Longshaw by volunteers.

                  The National Trust has owned and managed Longshaw since 1931. It was donated to the trust after being saved from development after the Duke of Rutland sold the estate to the Sheffield Corporation.
                  Historically there is evidence of human habitation here since the Bronze Age. Nearby Yarncliff quarry has produced millstones since the 15th century. More recently the Duke of Rutland built the shooting lodge in 1855.
                  Today the NT manage the estate for conservation and as a leisure area for the huge numbers of people who visit every year. The numbers often become a problem on hot sunny days in Padley Gorge, but the locals and the rangers join forces to keep the area beautiful.
                  There is no entry fee but the NT have a couple of pay and display car parks (free to members) and an excellent cafe. Paying for parking and a cuppa puts a bit of money back into the estate.
