Rabbi Seckel Löb Wormser, the Baal Schem from Michelstadt, worked here from 1822 to 1847. The Michelstadt synagogue is one of the very few Jewish places of worship that have been preserved in South Hesse after the Nazi persecution of the Jews.

The location of the Michelstadt synagogue reflects the social status of Judaism at the end of the 18th century: the Jews were allowed to settle within the city walls, but only on the very edge, in a ghetto. The building from 1791 replaced an older previous building on the same site.
