The town church in its current form dates back to 1461. The construction work was completed in 1537 with the erection of the tower. The various stages of construction and completion are documented by several foundation stones and dates attached to the building inside and out. Inside the church numerous funerary monuments and epitaphs of the count's family can be seen. These are sculptural works in different styles. Until recently, members of the count's house were still buried in the crypt.

The Protestant town church has been the heart of Michelstadt in the Odenwald since the 15th century, together with the half-timbered town hall opposite. The octagonal stair tower, which was added in 1475, is particularly striking in front of the red plastered gable. At the site where previous buildings had stood since the 9th century, the Schenken von Erbach gave the church its late Gothic appearance through additions and alterations. The pseudo-basilical hall church, whose side aisles are built so high that the central nave no longer has any windows in the upper part - so-called clerestory -, houses many graves from the High Middle Ages to the High Gothic period. The so-called princely crypt, the burial place of the Counts of Erbach, is particularly interesting.
