    Triumphal Arch Innsbruck
The Triumphal Arch in Innsbruck is one of its most famous landmarks. It was built in 1765 at the southern exit of the city. It was built to celebrate the wedding of Archduke Leopold (third son of Maria Theresa and Franz Stephan of Lorraine) and the Spanish Princess Maria Ludovica. In connection with the wedding celebrations, Innsbruck was tasked with various preparations. The streets and sidewalks had to be repaired and better lit. Residential areas had to be created, and the now-insignificant city moat had to be filled. As part of this modernization, the suburban gate at the exit of the old town onto Maria-Theresien-Straße was demolished. The resulting blocks served as building material for the Triumphal Arch. Constantin Walter was responsible for the planning, using the templates from the Arch of Constantine, and then for the construction management of these triumphal arches. Due to time constraints, the sculptural decoration was initially only provisionally created by Johann Gahenauer from wood and plaster. The death of Emperor Franz Stephan on August 18, 1765, resulted in the previously planned marble version being reworked. The north side of the Triumphal Arch commemorates the loss. In 1774, the sculptor Balthasar Moll was commissioned to create it.

The triumphal arch was built in 1765 for a wedding. Unfortunately, today's environment does not do justice to the building, but it is worth approaching it from both sides.

Already in the city center of Innsbruck, at the southern end of Maria-Theresien-Straße, you will see the imposing Triumphal Arch. It is one of the most famous sights in the city. The three-gate monument, modeled on Roman triumphal arches, was built in 1765 on the orders of Empress Maria Theresa. She had it built for the wedding of her son Archduke Leopold to the Spanish Princess Maria Ludovica. The marble reliefs on the south side of the Triumphal Arch, made by Balthasar Moll in 1774, commemorate Leopold's wedding, while those on the north side commemorate the death of his father, Emperor Franz Stephan, who died unexpectedly in Innsbruck during the wedding celebrations.
