The city is one of the oldest French centers for Marian pilgrimages and is picturesquely situated in the lovely volcanic area of the Velay and therefore has a corresponding cultural and touristic importance.
The aim of the Marian pilgrims was a black Madonna in Notre Dame Cathedral. The Saint-Michel-d'Aiguilhe church is one of the most important and - due to its exposed location on an old volcanic vent - one of the most striking buildings in the city, alongside the cathedral.
The pink Notre-Dame-de-France statue of Mary on the Corneille lava rock above the cathedral is also visible from afar.
