For me it is one of the most beautiful side valleys in the Engadin, I always feel very comfortable here.
A carriage ride to Val Fex is also not to be overlooked; it is one of the most romantic experiences in the region. At the village square in Sils there are two-horse carriages ready to drive to Platta, Crasta or all the way up to the Hotel Fex, and of course back again.

    자주 묻는 질문

What are the recommended hiking trails in Val Fex for different skill levels, and are there circular options?

Val Fex offers a variety of trails suitable for all abilities, from leisurely strolls to more challenging hikes. For beginners or those seeking a relaxed experience, the paths leading through the valley floor to the charming hamlets like Fex Platta, Fex Crasta, and up to Hotel Fex are ideal. These are generally easy to moderate. A popular circular walk involves starting from Sils Maria, walking through the valley, and perhaps returning via a different path or using a horse-drawn carriage. The initial section along the Fedacla river features a picturesque gorge path. For more experienced hikers, trails extend towards the end of the valley, offering views of the glaciers and surrounding high Alpine peaks.

Is Val Fex suitable for a winter hike or snowshoeing, and what routes are available?

Absolutely! Val Fex transforms into a stunning winter wonderland. It's an excellent destination for winter hiking and snowshoeing. The main valley path, which is largely car-free, is often prepared for winter walkers. You can enjoy peaceful walks through snow-covered meadows and larch forests, often leading to the guesthouses in Fex Crasta or Hotel Fex. Snowshoeing allows you to explore off the main paths, offering a deeper immersion into the serene landscape. Horse-drawn sleigh rides are also a popular and romantic way to experience the valley in winter.

How do I get to Val Fex, and where can I park my car?

Val Fex is accessible from Sils Maria. The valley itself is largely car-free, with motor vehicle traffic restricted to residents. Visitors can park their cars in Sils Maria, typically at designated parking areas near the village entrance or the Sils/Segl Maria Post bus stop. From there, you can proceed on foot, by electric bike, or take a horse-drawn carriage or sleigh ride into the valley.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options within Val Fex?

Yes, despite its tranquil and car-free nature, Val Fex offers charming options for refreshments and overnight stays. Small hamlets like Fex Platta and Fex Crasta, as well as the Hotel Fex further up the valley, host guesthouses and restaurants. These establishments provide opportunities to enjoy local cuisine and experience the traditional Alpine atmosphere, making for a delightful stop during your visit or a peaceful retreat for a longer stay.

Is Val Fex dog-friendly, and what should I consider when hiking with my dog?

Val Fex is generally very dog-friendly, offering ample space for walks and exploration. Many hikers enjoy bringing their canine companions. However, it's always advisable to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or wildlife, and to ensure you clean up after them. Be mindful of other visitors, particularly those on horse-drawn carriages. Water sources from the Fedacla river are usually available, but carrying extra water for your dog is recommended, especially on warmer days.

What public transport options are available to reach Val Fex?

The primary public transport access point for Val Fex is Sils Maria. You can reach Sils Maria by bus from St. Moritz, which is well-connected by train. Once in Sils Maria, the entrance to Val Fex is a short walk from the Sils/Segl Maria Post bus stop. As the valley is car-free, public transport will get you to the starting point, from where you can explore on foot, by bike, or via horse-drawn carriage.

Are there any specific viewpoints or hidden gems in Val Fex that are worth seeking out?

Beyond the general beauty of the valley, the views of the surrounding high Alpine mountains like Piz Corvatsch and Piz Tremoggia are spectacular, especially from higher points in the valley. A unique cultural highlight is the abandoned quarry in the "Ganda" area, which has been transformed into an interactive museum showcasing the historical quarrying of Fexerplatten, a distinctive type of gneiss. Exploring the small hamlets themselves, with their traditional architecture, also offers a glimpse into the valley's heritage.

What is the historical significance of Val Fex, and how has it been preserved?

Val Fex has a rich history, with its name derived from the Romansh word "feda," meaning sheep, indicating its past as pasture land. It was mentioned as "Fedes" as early as 1303 and has been continuously inhabited for centuries. A significant aspect of its modern history is a 1954 agreement that protects the valley by prohibiting parking, ski apparatus, power lines, and new holiday homes. This foresight has been crucial in preserving its unspoiled nature and tranquil atmosphere, making it a unique natural and cultural heritage site.

Can I cycle in Val Fex, and what kind of bikes are suitable?

Yes, cycling is a fantastic way to explore Val Fex. The main valley paths are well-suited for electric bikes, mountain bikes, or even sturdy touring bikes. The car-free environment makes for a very pleasant and safe cycling experience. You can cycle through the meadows and forests, reaching the various hamlets and enjoying the stunning Alpine scenery. Bike rentals, including e-bikes, are available in Sils Maria.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see in Val Fex?

Various bird species, including birds of prey, can be spotted soaring above the peaks. The valley's rich flora also supports a diverse insect population, including many butterflies. While larger mammals like chamois or ibex are more elusive, their presence is a testament to the valley's untouched nature.
