"Via the Wilhelmstraße you can reach the 87 steps that lead to the 2.6 km long sandy beach and the pier.This staircase is also called sky or angel ladder.The beach around the pier was widened in 1999 with 750,000 cubic meters of fine beach sand.
The length of the pier Sellin is 394 meters, making it the longest but also the most beautiful pier in Ruegen. In fine weather you have a wonderful view of the chalk coast of the Jasmund, Sassnitz and Mukran. In a southerly direction you can make out the Nordperd from Mönchgut. The Sellin pier is one of the landmarks of the island of Rügen. In my opinion, it's the most beautiful pier in the Baltic Sea. The view from above over the Himmelsleiter (Stairway to Heaven) and the pier itself is particularly impressive. A visit at sunrise is especially recommended! 👌

When visiting the pier, you can learn a lot about its history thanks to information panels. At the end of the pier, there's a diving gondola that allows you to dive to the seabed.

The pier restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the kitchen is open from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The pier in Sellin extends 394 meters into the sea, while the pier in Binz extends only 370 meters. The white structure (restaurant) at the beginning of the bridge makes it not only longer for me, but also much more beautiful. A great subject for photographers from sunrise to sunset and even at night.

At the beginning of the last century, holiday guests were picked up by sailboats from the big steamers and brought ashore. That was dangerous at times. So in 1900, a boat accident killed several people. In order to facilitate and secure the landing, the Sellin community built in 1906 a nearly 509 meter long bridge. A sky ladder with 99 steps led the holiday guests to the Sellin mainland.
Over time, storms and ice caused severe damage to the pier. In 1924 and 1942 it was completely destroyed except for the bridgehead. Rebuilt after the war, the pier received a dance restaurant. Unfortunately, the bridge had to be demolished in 1979 for safety reasons - it was completely rotted.

A visit to the Sellin pier is an experience even if you are not there yet! Wilhelmstrasse rises gently up to the 30-meter-high cliffs of the Baltic Sea.
Pretty guesthouses in the style of seaside resort architecture line the boulevard.
Prince Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus built it in 1895. This marked the beginning of Sellin's development into a popular Baltic Sea resort. The Sellin pier is a landmark of the island of Rügen and at the same time a great symbol of the future after the political change.
Thanks to a friendly connection between the former Sellin seaside resort photographer Hans Knospe and the then Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker, the opportunity unexpectedly arose to rebuild the pier, which had been demolished in the 1970s, based on a historical model. Since then, the island of Rügen has once again had a pier that can be compared to those in other seaside resorts.
Sellin's first pier was inaugurated in 1906. It was approximately 500 meters long, but storms and ice drift repeatedly caused damage. During the terrible ice winter of 1941/42, only the bridge house remained standing, and from 1956 onward, it became a popular dance hall. Old enough locals like to recount the legendary festivals at this truly outstanding site. In 1974, the facility was closed, and four years later, it was demolished. Since 1998, the pier has once again shone in its historic 1927 appearance. Even its original construction combined practicality with pleasure. The pier served as a landing stage for excursion boats and provided food and drink for bathers. It remains so today. Celebrating festivals, taking an excursion, enjoying the sea air at a café – these have always been the hallmarks of this extraordinary structure. A "Stairway to Heaven" and an elevator lead down to the 394-meter-long wooden structure with its palm garden and Imperial Pavilion. Here, you can get married, celebrate, or simply enjoy the culinary offerings. And every year at the end of July, the big Pier Festival takes place here!

The wide staircase connecting Sellin's villa-lined boulevard

with the beach and the magnificent pier is called "Heaven's Ladder."

Climb the 87 wooden steps to the so-called "main beach," or simply use the ramp or the free elevator.

This stretch of beach is only about 1 kilometer long and 60 meters wide,
