According to legend, Hagen von Tronje killed the Nibelung hero Siegfried at this well after a joint hunting trip. The unsuspecting Siegfried leaned down to the spring to quench his thirst. Hagen thrust the spear through his shoulder, his only vulnerable body.

What happened before: Siegfried defeated the dragon and bathed in its blood, which made him invulnerable. Since a linden leaf had been placed on his shoulder and therefore no blood could "work" there, this exact spot was vulnerable. But how did Hagen know that? The Siegfried fountain at Grasellenbach was "discovered" in 1844. Siegfried wells in the sense of the Nibelungen saga are called fountains in the Odenwald, at which Siegfried von Hagen von Tronje is said to have been murdered.
