For centuries, the people of Ratingen have had the nickname "Dumeklemmer" (Thumbklemmer). Allegedly, they once pinched the thumb of St. Suitbertus in the city gate when he wanted to bring Christianity to the then pagan citizens of Ratingen. Suitbertus is said to have cursed her, saying that in the future all Ratingen children would be born with a "flat thumb". In reality, Ratingen was the seat of the executioner of the Bergisches Land for centuries, and the use of thumbscrews to extract confessions was particularly feared.
