The mythical founder of Salamis was Teukros, son of Telamon, the king of the Greek island of Salamis of the same name. He is said to have landed on Cyprus after the destruction of Troy, where Zeus built a temple and married Eune, the daughter of Kinyras. His father-in-law was, from an incest connection with Eune's sister Smyrna, the father of Adonis. Teukros founded a city in Cyprus, which he named after his home island Salamis.

Since the 11th century BC Salamis held the leading role among the Cypriot city royalty. The initially relatively small town with a necropolis on its western edge expanded from the 8th century BC.
