The harbor promenade of Funchal is very nice and clean. Unfortunately overrun by tourists in every season. In the shops and bars and cafes is Portuguese, English and sometimes German spoken, the prices are sometimes a bit overpriced. Funchal has a very nice old town. The narrow streets invite for a walk. Bus and taxi connections are available along the entire harbor promenade.

Very beautifully designed promenade right along the harbor with several small parks, various cafes, restaurants and lots of seating. In the evening the parks and the promenade are beautifully illuminated and souvenirs and other things are sold from three-wheeled Italian Piaggios. There are also many statues on the promenade and in the parks. Great view of the cruise ships.

If you like the hustle and bustle of Funchal, this is definitely the place for you. The contrast to the loneliness in the mountains was too great for us, so that after 45 minutes we fled back to the tranquility of the plateau.

Funchal, the capital of Madeira Island, is a city surrounded by beauty. Its flowers of various colors and shapes lend an extraordinary color to the entire city.
In terms of gastronomy, the grilled limpets and the characteristic skewers made with bay leaves, among others, are also delicious and highly appreciated.
Regarding hospitality, it has numerous hotels to suit a wide range of budgets.
Its New Year's Eve fireworks display is world-renowned and appreciated, attracting a huge number of cruise ships out to sea every year.
As for hiking, it has numerous trails, along various levadas and beyond. Pico do Areeiro is one of the most spectacular trails, with breathtaking views.
