The ramparts were built at the beginning of the 13th century, by order of Count Philippe Hurepel, nicknamed 'the unruly', on the remains of a Gallo-Roman wall. They were fortified in the 16th-17th century. Fortified on the east by the castle, the ramparts count four towers flanked by gates: Gayole, des Dunes, de Calais and des Degrés.
