Zahara de los Atunes is a small coastal town - between Barbate and Bolonia - on the Costa de la Luz in Andalusia, ie on the Atlantic Ocean. This small town was founded by the Romans like Bolonia and is known as the center of tuna fishing. The present-day church (Nuestra Señora del Carmen) and the Castillo de las Almadrabas, the fortress, served at that time as a salt store and as storage for the salted tuna.
There are two so-called "house winds": the Levant and the Poniente. Therefore, the place is not only for beach tourists, but also for "wind tourists" interesting.
The official bathing season is from mid-June to mid-September. The tidal range is about 1.5 m.
The local fishermen still use the same method as the Phoenicians and the Romans. "La Almadraba" (= tuna trap) has been called that since Moorish times.
