    Marian sanctuary built according to tradition in the 4th century, Oropa contains an important statue of the Black Madonna and in 1957 Pope Pius XII elevated it to a minor basilica. The climb that leads to the sanctuary was made famous by Marco Pantani's feat, perhaps the most memorable of all: in the 1999 Giro he won here with an epic comeback.

            I recommend going up to the Galleria Rosazza and going down to Piedicavallo in the Cervo valley, a bit more uphill but worth the long descent into the valley. So closes a loop, the only attention is better to have a couple of lights for the gallery that is not illuminated.
