The Gautor (1670) – Mainz 🚴‍♂️

The predecessor of the Gautor was the three-gate, tower-fortified Gaupforte (Gau Gate), which since the Middle Ages has represented the most important connection between the city and the "Gau" (Middle High German for "landscape"). During the expansion of the fortifications under Elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn, a brick transverse wall with a passageway was built. This passageway was framed by gates on both sides.

The remaining outer Gautor, dating from 1670, exhibits Roman-Baroque stylistic features. A copy of St. Martin with two beggars has been enthroned high above since 2002. The original of the figurative group is now on display in the Mainz State Museum. Since 1998, the Gautor has been relocated near its original location, the entrance to Gaugasse. Anyone walking up the narrow, steep Gaugasse from Schillerplatz will inevitably head toward the restored Baroque gate. Near its original location, the Gautor (Gauteur Gate) illustrates a piece of Mainz's city history. 🚴‍♂️
