Thanks to the railway and the Ludwigskanalhafen, Wendelstein experienced an economic boom in the 19th century.

The trades of the wood turners and metal pushers as well as three large quarry companies made the place an industrial center.

Wilhelm Jegel, himself a quarry owner, became mayor after 1870. The new building of the first town hall from 1886 and the fountain on the market square from 1879 go back to him.

Not only the quarries were characteristic of the place, but also the favorable location on the Schwarzach. Paper mills and hammer mills were built early on. By isolated finds one knows that already in the stone age people were in the area of today's Wendelstein. Tomb finds from 1984 show a settlement of the area along the Schwarzach in the late Bronze Age around 1300 BC. Chr. [3] The place was first mentioned in documents in 1259. The name was probably derived from the winding around a stone Schwarzach. According to legend, however, the name derives from the Wends, a Slavic tribe. The nucleus of the village was a Frankish tabernacle in the loop of the Schwarzach. The lying on the Schwarzach districts Wendelstein were from 1505 to 1806 border towns between the land areas of the imperial city of Nuremberg and the Principality of Ansbach.

The first mention of a church, presumably a chapel, dates back to 1325. The fortified church of St. George was built in the 14th century. Worth seeing is the renovated three-winged altarpiece from 1510 by Hans Süß von Kulmbach.

From the 15th century Messerer and Klingenschmiede were based in Wendelstein.

With the industrialization in the 19th century settled Drechsler and metal pushers, the sandstone mining was intensified. In 1843, the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal was built in the north of Wendelstein.
