          The small former quarry opens up the sequence of layers of the Lower Muschelkalk and is now operated by the Benkert gravel works.
          On the edge of the Höhfeldplatte in Thüngersheim, the full extent of the Benkert quarry becomes visible. The dimension is gigantic. Shell limestone is mined up to the very edge of the landscape protection area. The massive rock wall, a good 20 meters high, is impressive. From here you can also see the ten-hectare swath in the forest on the opposite side of the quarry. In 2018, the Benkert company felled hundreds of trees here in protest for the expansion of its quarry.
          It seems that the Benkert company wants to expand the quarry to the west. Aerial photos in the digital Bavarian Atlas show a vineyard surrounded by hedges on the edge of the existing mining area. The hedges are now gone, the rows of vines have disappeared, and the soil has been removed. (main post)
