After returning to Moresnet in 1894, the Franciscans, on the initiative of their President Johannes Ruiter, decided to build a crossroads. It was only through the brother Quintilian Borren that the work could be completed until early 1904.
14 large stations were created in the manner of a grotto made of Belgian quarry stones. They are covered on the outside with lava stones and on the inside with dripstones on the ceilings. The inner back walls are decorated in a mosaic-like manner with many details. The stations of the cross were created by the Cologne sculptor Wilhelm Albermann from French sandstone.
A specialty is the XII. Station, the crucifixion of Christ. It is designed as a calvary with space for services. The relief in the chapel of the XII. Station in the represents a crucifixion group with St. Francis depicted. In 1903, Mary's representation and that of the apostle John, the crosses of the thieves and that of the captain were added above the grotto. They were designed by the Aachen sculptor Lambert Piedboeuf. In 1981 the figure of Christ and the figures of the two thieves were replaced by bronze sculptures based on a design by Franciscan artist Laurentius Ulrich Englisch. They were badly weathered.
For me it is one of the most beautiful ways of the cross, a visit is worthwhile!
