                In memory of the four hundred men and women who were killed on the borders of the Czechoslovakia during an attempt to escape behind the "Iron Curtain" in the years 1945-1989, as well as those who were forcibly expelled from their homeland, the Institute of National Memory and the Confederation of Political Prisoners of Slovakia initiated the erection of the Freedom Gate monument under Devín Castle. at the confluence of the Morava and Danube rivers.
                The monument was ceremonially unveiled on November 17, 2005, on the Day of the Fight for Freedom and Democracy, by the Chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, Pavol Hrušovský. The work of the author Petr Meszároš shows a broken gate, inside which there is a curved metal grate.
