The Nördlinger Ries is a crater that is said to have formed around 14.6 million years ago as a result of an asteroid impact. The crater has a diameter of about 20 to 24 kilometers, the crater floor is about 150 meters below the surrounding surface of the Swabian-Franconian Jura. However, you can only really see the whole thing from the air. From the church tower you still have a beautiful view of the city and the beautiful, green (heath) landscape of the Nördlinger Ries in the distance.
