An important place to pause and consider where what crual atrocities people are able to do, if they "obey only the orders of the authorities" and be blinded by fear and theories of the theories of sin!
Even today, people are not protected from falling into such patterns again!
The Mauthausen concentration camp was the only pure death camp (camp with the sole aim of destroying people) on the territory of the "German Reich", the other three (Auschwitz + Birkenau concentration camp, Treblinka concentration camp, Lublin-Majdanek concentration camp) were all in occupied Poland.
There is a way of visiting especially helpful for cyclists. You do not drive up the hill in the Wiener Graben near the sign to the concentration camp, but continue a little further into it until you see the old quarry on the right. The first access to the quarry is closed with a grid. A few meters further on is a second access which leads to the small lake at the foot of the rock wall ("Drachenfliegerwand") and to the death stairs. Here you can leave your bike and walk up the death stairs. So you save yourself the very steep driveway to the concentration camp and reach first the part of the memorials, which may also be a meaningful access in the sense of commemoration. Once at the top you can go on to the documentation center and the few remaining buildings of the concentration camp.
"To all of you, I erect a monument in my house and in my walls, giving them a name worth more than sons and daughters: I give them an eternal name, which is never repaid." Prophet Isaiah 56: 5
