Nestled near the Lousios River in Greece, these ruins would have looked quite different when the monastery first stood in the 10th century. Founded during the Byzantine era, it served as a spiritual and cultural centre, housing valuable manuscripts and religious relics.

The monastery had a turbulent history and played a vital role in preserving Greek Orthodox traditions and the artistry of the region.

You can visit any time. Although there are well-maintained steps, some of the ruined walls are unstable so take care whilst exploring. Take some water with you as you won't find any refreshments.

The abandoned monastery was replaced by a “new building” (which is also a few hundred years old) further up in the gorge. It wasn't clear to me whether the ruins could officially be visited. It is signposted, but there is a door at the entrance, which was open

Well-developed stairs to the top, only in the ruin itself the old walls no longer seem so trustworthy in some places. Definitely worth a visit, but bring water with you - there are no monks waiting here with water and coffee!

Officially, the ruins should no longer be entered. Danger of collapse. The outer wall does not look particularly trustworthy and unstable. The metal door at the monastery entrance is open; enter at your own risk.
