The Göbel fountain has been a popular meeting place in the heart of the city since 1999.

The new water feature caused a stir beyond the city limits even before its final installation on the Hallmarkt. The artist, Prof. Bernd Göbel, showed a lot of sensitivity in implementing the fountain idea - not only in helping the fountain to have a special aura in its current location, but also in dealing with the criticism of one of the four sculptures.

The sensitive and creative staging of city history has brought many Halle residents and their guests into close contact with the fountain surround made of Seeberg sandstone and the eight bronze figures from day one. The water feature, named after its creator, is therefore a popular meeting place for young and old, and not just in summer.

The tour around the fountain begins on the side facing the city library on Salzgrafenstrasse, with a look at the pool edge group on the "foundation of the city" (group in the foreground of the picture). Halle has a long tradition as a salt town, which is still maintained by the Halloren people today.

Bernd Göbel has recorded this development of the city in a mixture of authenticated and pictorially objectified history. Charlemagne granted permission to found the city. An old tradition also says that the moon and stars shone during this process. They are still included in the city's coat of arms today. The group of figures shows Halle residents chiseling their city coat of arms. The city and church leaders, who granted Halle city rights, look over the shoulder of their bearded ancestor. A Halloren boy dutifully holds the crescent moon at the ready. To this day, it is not clear who is credited with the discovery of the four salt springs. The artist has erected a monument to both animals known from tradition - sow and dog - and leaves it up to the viewer to decide who has rolled around in the brine.
