The decision to build the 36 arcaded crypts was made in 1879, and just two years later, in 1881, the complex, a brick structure in the Neo-Renaissance style, was completed. This rapid completion is likely due to the fact that the construction was financed entirely by private funds. Consequently, the affluent, aristocratic bourgeoisie of the Ringstrasse era chose to be buried here. The Old Arcades flank the main axis, approximately 100 meters from the main entrance, Gate 2. The crypt complex accommodates 36 burial sites.
