As the name suggests, the city was once founded on a green mountain. Strictly speaking, it was actually a castle belonging to the Thuringian landgrave, which he had built in the 12th century on what is now the city plateau. A certain level of prosperity developed in Grünberg until the late Middle Ages, which can be seen today in the numerous half-timbered houses and former monastery buildings. Strolling through the streets and alleys you can also reach the steeply sloping Brunnental. The cutting in the terrain, which was up to 60 meters deep, offered natural protection from enemies. Due to its steep slopes, it is still undeveloped and is therefore a natural oasis directly adjacent to the old town. Hiking trails lead through and small ponds have been created in the valley floor.
