Catholic parish church of St. Remigius in Wittlaer

St. Remigius was originally the private church of a manorial estate. At the beginning of the 13th century it was rebuilt as a three-aisled pillar basilica, as evidenced by the aforementioned altar consecration. The central nave is disproportionately wide because its walls stand on the foundations and remains of the walls of the previous building.

During the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), St. Remigius was badly damaged during the siege of nearby Kaiserswerth in 1702 and rebuilt a few years later in 1708.
(...) Restoration work was carried out between 1868 and 1871, during which the side aisle walls on the outside were rebuilt, baroque elements in the interior were removed and the interior was given a new color scheme. In addition, the tower was also rebuilt in 1878.
Severely damaged during the Second World War, St. Remigius was restored in 1949. In the following years, various restoration work was carried out on the church, until finally a comprehensive church renovation took place from 1994 to 1995, which still shapes the appearance today and restored the white interior design from before 1868.

"... Wittlaer is located in the northernmost part of Düsseldorf on the right bank of the Rhine. The villages of Bockum, Wittlaer, Einbrungen and Froschenteich are grouped together as Wittlaer. The parish church of St. Remigius stands on a hill that slopes westwards to the floodplains of the Schwarzbach, which flows into the Rhine there. The church is a late Romanesque building from the 12th/13th century with a processional cross and a baptismal font from around 1200 and beautiful furnishings from the 15th century. The wooden ceiling from the 19th century was restored in 1995. You can also find modern sacred art here: above all the church windows by Jan Thorn-Prikker and some works by Ewald Mataré. We do not know the year our parish was founded. Historians tell us the first written source is 1144. But according to the findings of art historians, the church had already been standing for a long time by that time (300 years?). ..."
