    The lake is surrounded to the north and east by the foothills of the Totes Gebirge. The town of Altaussee is located directly on the western shore. It is drained by the Altausseer Traun, one of the three source rivers of the Traun. The shores of the Altausseer See are practically undeveloped. A charming walking path, which often offers views of the Totes Gebirge and the Dachstein massif, leads around the lake.

              The Altausseer See (also Altausseersee) is an alpine lake in the Styrian Salzkammergut in Austria. It is located in the Altaussee nature reserve.

                The Altausseer See is a dimictic lake. In spring, after the ice has melted, the entire body of water (first myxis) mixes and brings oxygen-rich water to great depths. In the summer months, extremely pronounced thermoclines form, which are not destroyed by the typical thermal summer winds. The heated surface layer (epilimnion) lies on top of the thick, less oxygenated base layer (hypolimnion).

                In autumn, when the water cools down again, the phase of the second myxis (mixing) begins, which - after a largely uniform temperature of approx. 4 ° C has been reached - is followed by ice formation on the water surface, which continues to cool. In the lake there are mainly oxygen-requiring fish species such as arctic char and lake trout, which prefer such conditions.
