The tower of San Giovanni, built by the Aragonese before 1591, stands in the seaside resort of the same name. Its main function was to serve as a watchtower and defense against enemy ships, in particular those of Saracen (from the East) and Barbary (from the Maghreb) origins, which were frequent in this part of the coast.

Every year, summer concerts and performances are held near the tower with notable people from various parts of Italy.

In the coastal section southeast of the Fava Castle is the tower of San Giovanni, in the town of the same name. It was built at the beginning of the 17th century and abandoned again in 1720. It was restored in 1778 and then abandoned again towards the end of the century. It was not until the French attack in 1793 that the tower was repaired and occupied. Some time later it was finally abandoned. It is 10 meters high (from ground to terrace) and has a cylindrical shape with a conical base (diameter 8.40 meters). The half-height entrance leads to a small domed chamber, with a hatch leading to the terrace, on the parapet of which the cannon emplacements are still visible. It could accommodate two or three armed men.

The building is located near a small church known in ancient sources as Ecclesia Sancti Johannis de Portunono. The port referred to by the place name must be the one referred to in 15th century documents with the name of Sa Galitta, also called the port of the Fava Castle or the port of Posada, since it was used by this place. This pier, also called the port of Pedras Nieddas, at the southern mouth of the Rio Mannu, should not be confused with the port of Santa Lucia, which is further south. From the tower you can see the entire surrounding area.
