This truly impressive landmark, crowning the summit here in the Kitzbühel region, is arguably the largest accessible summit cross in the world. However, it is not dedicated to Christ, who, as the incarnate Son of God, took up the cross for our salvation, but to one of his disciples: James the Elder. In one of his catechesis, Pope Benedict XVI (who died in 2022) emphasized this. said of him:

Thus, James the Greater stands before us as an eloquent example of generous fidelity to Christ. He, who initially expressed through his mother the request to sit with his brother beside the Master in his kingdom, was the first to drink the cup of suffering, to share martyrdom with the Apostles."
