Rainwater bubbles up from the mountain here. It has washed away large and small chunks and even small pieces of the distinctive rock. Alabaster is a mineralogical variety of gypsum, similar to marble; unlike marble, however, it is a poor conductor of heat. Due to its low weather resistance, it is only used indoors. Alabaster gives jewelry, sculptures and vessels a noble appearance thanks to its crystalline structure and milky shimmer. The basic substance is usually white, but its color variations in surfaces, veins and speckles range into yellow, ochre, brown and red. Conclusion: You want to touch it and be amazed.

From Masserberg, you can quickly reach Heubach via the Nadelöhr or Schröderfelsen, or the Werraquellhütte. It's an ideal starting point. The Rennsteighaus in Masserberg opened in 2013. It offers a good starting point for tours on the Rennsteig, with adjacent parking and public transport connections. Especially in the winter months, you can access the cross-country ski trail directly from the Rennsteighaus Masserberg, as the snow groomer is also parked there. Masserberg is one of the 13 DSV Nordic Aktiv centers in the Thuringian Forest. But even in the "snow-free" months, there's plenty to discover. The simple late baroque functional building was hastily erected in the summer of 1783 to serve as a guest house for Karl August and his hunting party. Building materials were obtained from the ruins of Ilmenau Castle and the surrounding forest. Goethe often spent time here as a guest. The museum's exhibition is well worth seeing because it offers insights into the hunting habits and social life of the Weimar court.
