A really beautiful cycle path on an old railway line. It is completely asphalted and is therefore a wonderful ride and there are one or two bridge highlights to admire along the way.

The “Principality of Laàs” is a particularly friendly place worth seeing; on the “Boulevard Laàs Vegas” you can meet well-known and lesser-known people with a connection to the community. At the entrance to the town you will be greeted by a customs house with a barrier :-)

Located on the route of the Santiago de Compostela trail, as the statues and shell signs found in the town remind us, Navarrenx is a member of the association of the most beautiful villages in France. The town has a remarkable heritage. This medieval bastide has the particularity of being one of the first fortified cities in France. It has an austere and military side and presents classical style buildings.

In the past, at no. 15 and no. 5, there was a pilgrim hostel that belonged together. With Covid this has been closed. A French-English Couple bought #5 cheaply and have been doing so since Dec 2021. However, it looks more like "chambres d'hotes" and investment property. The double room costs 50,- and we didn't get any sheets or towels. In a room with a bunk bed we would have paid 25 euros per person. There is only one shared bathroom. Breakfast from 7:00 a.m. costs another 5,-. That doesn't seem very pilgrim-oriented to us. But since this is almost the only option in town, it's a matter of "supply and demand". The terrace is an oasis of calm on the city wall.

A small place in a valley between two steep climbs. There was a pilgrims' hospital here in the 10th century, of which only the church remains. A pilgrim statue greets you today.

Sauveterre is a “Castral Rescue”. From its origin in the 11th century, the city has been a place of refuge, it welcomes and protects the population by placing it under the direct protection of the viscount. It was not until the reign of two great viscounts of Béarn (Gaston VII Moncade and Gaston Fébus) in the 13th and 14th centuries to see the city counted among the four main boroughs of Béarn. The pilgrims of Compostela from the year 1000 will also participate in the enrichment of this city on the way to Vézelay. Located at the gates of Béarn, the city is endowed with impressive ramparts and defensive sites. Bridge, Tour Monréal, church, arsenal…, for the most part built on a rocky pile. Who would dare to blame Sauveterre? It was in the 16th century that this beautiful story came to an end. Attacks by the Spaniards and wars of religion got the better of the city despite its impressive ramparts and thus ended Sauveterre's strategic role at the gates of Béarn. Very pretty little town with a rich heritage. Overlooks the Gave de Pau. Bakery, café, grocery store and public toilet (next to the town hall)
