Known as Augusta Viromanduorum, Saint-Quentin was the capital of the Celtic Viromanduians in Gallia Belgica during Roman times. It is said to have received its current name from Saint Quintin, who, according to tradition, was martyred here while preaching Christianity in 287 AD. The martyr's remains are said to have been transferred to Saint-Quentin in 825. From the 4th to the 6th century, Saint-Quentin was a bishopric.
