St. Mary's Church in Dessau-Roßlau. Information: A late Gothic, three-aisled hall church made of brick, originally a Catholic church, and since 1534 a Protestant church. Destroyed in the air raids of March 1945, it was rebuilt in the 1990s. Today it serves as an event center.

Prince Leopold III Friedrich Franz commissioned his architect, Carlo Ignazio Pozzi, to build a tomb for himself between 1809 and 1812 on an artificial hill constructed of fieldstones. This octagonal, neoclassical structure was modeled after the Tower of the Winds in Athens and was initially called the Tower of the Eight Winds, but against the prince's wishes, it quickly became popularly known as the Napoleon Tower. A bust of Napoleon is said to have stood in the tower's entrance area until around 1860.[1] The prince lost interest in the tower when it became apparent that the structure was prone to flooding and therefore unsuitable as a funerary monument in his eyes. He apparently also decided against furnishing the tower's interior for this reason.[2] However, in October 1935, a body was indeed laid in state in the Napoleon Tower: that of Wilhelm Friedrich Loeper, the Reich Governor of Dessau. For the next ten years, the tower bore the name Loeper Tower. Friedrich Franz himself was buried next to his wife in the Waldersee church, while Loeper was later interred in the Mildensee cemetery.[3] The tower was severely damaged during the Elbe flood of 2002 when its lower level was flooded. Restoration was completed in 2005.
