Jean de La Fontaine was a French writer. He is considered one of the greatest classics in French literature, and some of his fables are still familiar to every French schoolchild today. He was born on July 8, 1621, in Château-Thierry. Here on the banks of the Marne River stands this sculpture, depicting some of the characters and animals from his fables.

Not the most beautiful monument in Château-Thierry, but perhaps the most original...

The American monument on Hill 204 near Château-Thierry is a monument commemorating the sacrifices and exploits of the Americans and the French during the First World War, in particular the Aisne-Marne and Oise-Aisne offensives in 1918. The monument consists of of a double colonnade rising above a long terrace, with two statues representing the United States and France, and an eagle on the opposite side. You can also see a large map of the area that shows the advance of Allied forces in 1918, as well as a table that shows directions and distances to historical points of interest. The monument offers a panoramic view of the Marne valley and the town of Château-Thierry.

Since you don't often come across larger towns along the cycle path, Chateau-Thierry is a good place to take a break or to get provisions.

The monument is dedicated to the two battles of the Marne. The site was chosen by Marshal Foch. The ossuary contains the bones of 1,500 unknown soldiers. In front of the chapel you have a magnificent view of the Marne Valley.

The 19th century town hall of Château-Thierry is located here. From the higher medieval castle walls you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city and the town hall.

A beautiful foot and bike path runs along the banks of the Marne. You have a beautiful view of the water and the town of Château-Thierry.
