Here you can look at some finds from the earth's earlier history that were found during mining.

The GDR's border barriers are not located directly on the border line. This lies between the actual border and the front barriers “upstream territory” of the GDR. There are no border or security facilities here. From 1967 onwards, the GDR border troops used the “upstream” to mark the actual border Territory" border columns painted black, red and yellow with the GDR emblem. They mark the border 3 to 5 meters east of the border line, which lies in the middle of the Aue stream in Hötensleben. Only specially trained "border reconnaissance officers" from the border troops who are considered to be particularly reliable are allowed to enter the territory of the GDR that is visible towards the Federal Republic. They are tasked with observing customs and federal border protection in the Federal Republic.

In Hötensleben there is part of the former border system in its original condition from 1989. Over a length of 350m and an area of 6.5ha there are, among other things, a blind wall, signal fence, field of vision and firing with light line, patrol path and vehicle obstacle, border wall and the Guide tower with motor vehicle position has been preserved. The course of the barrier at this point is also impressive because it was set up directly behind the houses in the village.

In total, around 280 million cubic meters of overburden were moved in the Schöningen opencast mine by 2016 and around 46 million tons of coal were extracted. The Elmsee is created to fill in the remaining opencast mine.
