From up here, there are always beautiful views down to the Elbe and the industrial port on the opposite side.

There's still plenty of action here on Sunday mornings, with numerous stalls inviting you to shop.

At Hamburg's most traditional market, pretty much everything that isn't nailed down has been traded every Sunday morning since 1703.

Every Sunday there is a lovely market right next to the fish auction hall.

The term "Outer Alster" refers to Hamburg's former fortifications. The Outer Alster was the part of the lake that lay outside the city walls, which were built in 1625. In 1804, the city walls and ramparts were demolished and the area renaturalized, but the spatial separation of the two lakes remained. Today, the Lombardsbrücke and the Kennedybrücke bridges span the river at this point. The areas around the Outer Alster developed somewhat differently on the east and west sides: While the western shore developed into a prosperous suburb towards the end of the 18th century, much of the eastern shore belonged to the Hamburg tax authorities and was only developed in the later decades of the 19th century.
