The 20-kilometer-long branch line between Bitterfeld and Stumsdorf, which opened in 1897, was a busy route for passengers and freight for more than eight decades. The branch line was considered indispensable for commuters to the coal and chemical mining areas of Bitterfeld and Wolfen, as well as for numerous agricultural businesses, open-cast mining and industrial companies. After 1990, freight traffic came to a complete standstill; passenger numbers were temporarily almost insignificant. Due to the poor financial situation of the state, the CDU state government canceled local passenger transport with Deutsche Bahn AG on October 1, 2002. After failed attempts to take over the line by private railway companies, the town of Zörbig campaigned to preserve the line and founded a municipal infrastructure company. It took over the line from Deutsche Bahn AG with the aim of preserving the business-related infrastructure for commercial enterprises and ensuring the quality of life for residents. After a partial reactivation, goods can be transported again on the Bitterfeld - Zörbig section of the line since August 2005.
