Historical Development First mentioned in 1355: The ferry served the exchange of goods – an important connection between Zerbst, Bernburg, and Köthen. The ferry rights were leased until 1680, then regulated by the Electorate of Brandenburg. In 1878, the first cable-driven ferry was built – previously manually operated with poles. Since then, it has used the river current for propulsion. Several new constructions followed: in 1901, 1925, 1975, and the current ferry from 1997 (built by the Georg Placke shipyard). Technical Data of the Current Ferry Type: Cable-driven ferry, powered by current and hydraulically when needed. Length: 34.5 m, width: 10.10 m, loading area: 138 m². Load capacity: 42 t total load, max. 25 t individual load. Capacity: Up to 12 cars. Operation times (2025): April–September: Mon–Fri 5:30 a.m.–8 p.m., Sat 7 a.m.–8 p.m., Sun 9 a.m.–8 p.m. October–March: Mon–Fri 5:30 a.m.–7 p.m., Sat 8 a.m.–6 p.m., Sun 9 a.m.–6 p.m. In the event of high water (>4.20 m level), ice drift, or storms, service will be suspended as a precaution.
