Meissen Cathedral is dedicated to Saints John and Donatus of Arezzo and is therefore named St. John and St. Donatus. Donatus of Arezzo was the patron saint of the old Diocese of Meissen and is one of the patron saints of the present-day Diocese of Dresden-Meissen. The cathedral, along with the Albrechtsburg Castle, the Bishop's Palace, and the Cathedral Provost's Office, forms part of the Burgberg ensemble that rises above Meissen's old town. The main body of the church is one of the most stylistically pure German-Gothic cathedrals. It also boasts one of the richest and most valuable furnishings of any Saxon church and numerous ancillary rooms from the earliest Gothic period to the late Late Gothic period. The Albrechtsburg Castle on the castle hill in Meissen is one of the most famous late Gothic architectural monuments and is considered the first palace building in Germany.[1] Starting in 1471, the Wettin Electors and Dukes of Saxony had a residential palace built there on the site of an older medieval castle. In 1710, the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory moved in. After 1864, the castle was remodeled again, and numerous rooms were decorated with historical paintings. Today, the hilltop castle is a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention[2] and houses a permanent exhibition on the eventful history of the site. The castle was built in 1530. The castle included a manor, a farmyard, a nursery with a rose garden, and a park with an island pond. The barn was built in the 18th century. Karl Leopold Prince of Schönberg-Weltenburg was the last owner of Gauernitz Castle. After its expropriation in 1945, the castle was used as a municipal office, a kindergarten, and for residential purposes. In 1990, a conference center was planned to be built in the castle, but this never happened. In 2002, the castle became private property, and in 2008, it was returned to the municipality through legal proceedings. After agreeing to renovation work, the owner was allowed to keep the castle, but nothing has happened to date. The castle is partially inhabited.
