Originally, Cauville-sur-Mer was divided into hamlets and localities organized into clos-hovels, such as Briquemare, Buglise, Chesnaie, Fleuritte, Marfauville and Tronquay. In 1823, Cauville was born from the merger of three municipalities, Rimbertot, Cauville and Buglise, by royal decree promulgated by King Louis XVIII. In 1913, at the request of the municipal council, the qualifier “sur-Mer” was added to distinguish the town from its namesake located in Calvados.

The name of our town is of Gallo-Roman origin. In the 12th century, the village was called Hugleville, becoming Heugleville sur mer in 1484, then Eugville in 1763 and finally Heuqueville. Heuqueville retained a feudal mound near the church until the 19th century. Before the revolution, Heuqueville had a sea watch, in order to avoid any enemy intrusion via our coasts. The church, dedicated to Saint Peter, was built in several periods starting from the 16th century. We invite you to come and visit this church and the secrets found there. the castle: A place for Belle Epoque celebrations The Clos des Fées bears witness to an abundant period, before the war of 1914, the Belle Epoque. Writers, painters, musicians met in Etretat. They also liked to frequent the inn of "la Belle Ernestine" in Saint-Jouin-Bruneval. She met the painter Albert Besnard, it was their son who had the castle of the clos des fées built in 1902. In 2013, a collective demanded that this endangered castle be saved. Today he has been granted. "This castle, pearl of the Alabaster Coast, was built at the very beginning of the 20th century by Louis Besnard, architect and mayor of Saint-Jouin-Bruneval. He is the son of the "beautiful Ernestine" (famous for its proximity to Courbet, Corot, the Dumas, Offenbach, Maupassant...) and Albert Besnard, Parisian painter and decorator of the Science Room of the Paris City Hall, the vestibule of the Paris School of Pharmacy, the chemistry amphitheater of the Sorbonne, the ceiling of the Comédie-Française, the dome of the Petit Palais."... The tragedian Sarah Bernardt was one of the guests at the St Jouin Bruneval estate. Legend has it that she appeared in a tray on a bed of rose petals. Typically Belle Epoque! The actress came as a neighbor. Le Havre was his starting point for his theatrical tours in America.
