The Karlstal Gorge offers young (circular hiking trail) and old (walking trail) the opportunity to enjoy this historic site. It surprises with a refreshing stay on hot days in a beautiful setting; it also changes its look with the play of incoming rays of sun, trees and the flow of water. After prolonged rainfall, make sure you wear good shoes/change of shoes ;-). Unfortunately, the Karlstal Gorge is often very busy during the holiday season, as it is very well known.

The Sägmühlweiher dams the water of the Kottelbach, which flows through the Neuhöfertal and then flows into the Moosalbe in the Moosalber Weiher at Oberhammer. In earlier documents, the pond was also called "Seegwoog". The current owner of the pond is the municipality of Trippstadt. After the Sägmühle ceased operations, the pond was used primarily by the village's youth as a natural bathing pond. To this day, the old pond is the heart of the Sägmühle camping and leisure center. The current fountain was bricked in 1933. But long before that there was a well - and until about 1800 a brick factory. Source: https://www.westpfalz.wiki/wiki/der-ziegelbrunnen/ Great views of the Kaltenborn valley! Opposite the brick fountain is a nice bench.

According to legend, an old woman lived here. Later, a shepherd and a damsel of the castle met there. When their love was forbidden, both drowned in the Moosalb. Two swans still swim at Klug'sche Mühle today, reminding them of the two young people. The cave is interesting and easy to get to.

It is a very beautiful and easy to walk tour. It is also suitable for children. (But be careful! There are a lot of small bridges and footbridges over the creek!) Appropriate footwear is recommended. Another tip: Dear hikers, take your used paper handkerchiefs home with you and dispose of them there! I always have a bag with me for my waste! Do it anyway. Thanks!!

If you follow one of the staircases that lead here and there up the rising flanks of the gorge, with a bit of luck you will discover the cave-like hermitage in which a hermit is said to have once lived. Inside there is a simple stone cross on a cracked base. The text on it is repeated on the cast-iron plaque next to it. If you take the trouble to decipher the couplets, you will learn more about the details. According to them, the cross is reminiscent of a tragic love death that is connected to Wilenstein Castle: "At Aschbach and immediately in the grave, the knight's bride is killed by a shepherd boy." The corresponding legend of the unfortunate "Fräulein von Wilenstein" and her beautiful shepherd boy can be found in Friedrich Wilhelm Hebel's collection of Palatinate legends. So the "hermitage" ultimately turns out to be part of an overall design concept that wanted to make the walk through nature a romantic and intellectual experience. A bit of horror story included.
