The Lühe-Schulau ferry transports its passengers back and forth. The crossing takes about 25 minutes. The connection between Wedel, now a city in the Hamburg metropolitan region, and Lühe, a village in the first mile of the Altes Land region, has existed since 1918.

The fortification is situated on a slightly elevated sand island on the right bank of the Schwinge River, only 6 kilometers from the Elbe. It takes the form of an oval ring wall measuring approximately 170 × 100 meters. The break in the wall on the southwest side is modern. The wall is still preserved to a height of 5.5 meters and is 20–30 meters wide at its base. The timber-and-earth structure was topped with a palisade and covered with sod. Within the interior, settlement and postholes, as well as ovens and hearths, have been excavated. There is no evidence of any violent destruction of the site. It was probably inhabited by approximately 150 people. A wooden quay wall was also discovered on the Schwinge River, extending towards the Elbe, adjacent to the fort. This small harbor suggests that the Schwedenschanze (Swedish entrenchment) was not only a defensive structure of the Old Saxons but also served a trade purpose.

Excavations in 2007 revealed that the site was inhabited between approximately 670 and 900 AD. Afterwards, the castle on the Spiegelberg hill in Stade likely took over its functions. The finds at the Schwedenschanze (Swedish entrenchment) sparked international interest among archaeologists, as the area is considered devoid of archaeological finds from this period. For example, in 2008, oars from the Early Middle Ages were discovered here for the first time in Germany. In the spring of 2009, a geophysical survey was conducted in the vicinity of the Schwedenschanze. Magnetic field analyses revealed the presence of rectangular wooden structures, 20 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, buried in the ground. Subsequent excavations by the University of Hamburg uncovered the remains of another rampart, 450 meters south of the Schwedenschanze, in the Ohle Dörp area.

In 2016, during the construction of two houses in Groß Thun, fragments of pottery and traces of two pile dwellings were discovered approximately 80 cm below the surface. Archaeologists dated the finds to around 600 AD and consider them remnants of the settlement belonging to the Schwedenschanze (Swedish entrenchment). In the spring of 2021, geophysical surveys near the Schwinge River revealed a third, significantly smaller fortification and an outer ditch between the Schwinge valley and the Geest ridge near Groß Thun. At the beginning of 2022, another, as yet undated, plank road was discovered.

Schwedenschanze (Stade) The Schwedenschanze is the name given to the remains of an early medieval hillfort in what is now the Groß Thun district in the south of the Hanseatic city of Stade. From the bridge, there is a magnificent view of the Schwedenschanze and the surrounding countryside.

The Este Barrage at Neuenfelde is an important flood protection structure at the mouth of the Este River where it flows into the Elbe near Hamburg-Neuenfelde. It protects the second line of dikes and regulates the water level. It comprises an inner and an outer barrage. A bascule bridge for road traffic is located here, which is occasionally closed for maintenance work, although pedestrians and cyclists can often cross. It protects against storm surges and high inflows of the Este by preventing flooding and regulating the water level. It is situated on the Elbe near the Airbus site and the former Sietas shipyard. The outer barrage is operated by the city of Hamburg, while the inner barrage belongs to the district of the city of Stade and protects the areas behind it as far as Buxtehude. A bascule bridge spans the structure and can be closed to road traffic.
