I thought that the ruins were freely accessible. They are not, but are cordoned off. Tour costs €8.50 from 1.30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Right next to the lobby there is a bakery. They are used to welcoming cyclists. Everything is homemade, they are very nice. Table and chairs outside sheltered for eating. I've been there twice, never disappointed.

The abbey is located in the heart of Lyons Forest, a beautiful beech forest offering numerous hiking and cycling trails. You can also fish in the abbey's ponds by reservation. Mortemer Abbey is a place steeped in history, nature, and mystery that is sure to enchant you.

The 17th-century wooden market halls are particularly noteworthy. This village, ranked among the most beautiful in France, is included in the Pays de Lyons region.

Originally built in 1134, Mortemer Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery close to Lyons-la-Foret. The abbey was a gift from Henry I of England. Over time, the abbey fell into disrepair. Despite being rebuilt in the 17th century, it stands in ruins today.

Is Mortemer Abbey the most haunted in France! Built in the 12th century by the fourth son of William the Conqueror, this royal abbey of Normandy affiliated with the Cistercian order has been classified as a historic monument since 1966. Over the centuries, ghost stories have permeated the place and traveled to the four corners of the country. This abbey, its museum, its gardens and its pond can be visited (paying). The White Lady: The legend of Mathilde the Emperor, who appears today in the guise of a White Lady. Granddaughter of William the Conqueror and grandmother of Richard I the Lionheart, the young woman was somewhat “frivolous”. In an attempt to calm him down, his father locked him up in the abbey for five years. The height of her punishment was that she was dispossessed of the throne of England. She died in 1167, at the age of 60, and rests today in a tomb in Rouen Cathedral. Did she harbor a desire for revenge because of this confinement? Maybe. » She was so unhappy in Mortemer that she would return there on full moon evenings. “If you come across her with white gloves, it portends a happy event. If she has black gloves, it’s a sign of death.”
