The Johannes Markt was called Neuer Markt until the 19th century. It was renamed after a statue of the evangelist was erected in 1880.

Der Hahnplatz müsste eigentlich Hohnplatz heißen, da die zum Pranger verurteilten auf dem Platz verhöhnt wurden.

Special Features of the School: 1. The Cloister Unusually for a Benedictine abbey, the three-sided cloister is located on the north side of the basilica. Where monks once read, wrote, and studied, students now work during their free time. The cloister also serves as a permanent exhibition space for student work. Both works of fine art and occasional exhibitions from other disciplines are on display here. The memorial next to the northwest corner of the cloister was inaugurated on January 28, 1967. Initially intended only for fallen teachers and students, and later for all victims of the two world wars, this statue continues to be a place of solace for students during times of particular grief. 2. The Courtyard Garden The Baroque abbey building was constructed around two courtyards. One forms the core of the three-sided cloister, which, contrary to Benedictine practice, was built on the north side of the church in Prüm. The other was originally the turning area for carriages, which let their noble passengers alight in the dry at the entrance (now the students' entrance hall). However, after the abbey building and the adjoining Prince's Hall lost their purpose following the dissolution of the monasteries by the French, no more carriages came, and the inner courtyard remained empty and desolate. 3. The Aula The Aula, often also called the Prince's Hall, was not part of the monastery's premises. Rather, it served as a reception hall for the Archbishop of Trier; the monks could only watch enviously from their separate wing. (Is this perhaps the reason why a small monk's head—clearly visible from the rotunda—stares defiantly at the splendor of his lord?) Today, classical concerts are held in the Aula; And once a year, the ladies and gentlemen of the 13th grade gather there to take their written exams.
