🌳 The buckthorn can grow up to 6 meters tall and thrives in moist forests and along stream banks. Its berries range in color from green to red to blackish-purple—and are poisonous. The bark contains special substances that were once even used medicinally. The wood was also used to make gunpowder. 💡 Tip: Keep a close eye on the berries on your hikes—they look pretty, but they're not for snacking!

Small ponds and pools often seem inconspicuous – but they are teeming with life. Frogs, newts, dragonfly larvae, and many tiny aquatic creatures barely visible to the naked eye frolic among the water lily pads, duckweed, and reeds. A small body of water is like a small treasure chest of nature: dragonflies find their nursery here, tadpoles develop into frogs, and aquatic plants provide oxygen and habitat. Even algae, small crustaceans, and microscopic single-celled organisms play an important role in the cycle. Tip for hikers: Stay quietly on the shore – you'll often spot dragonflies in flight or hear the croaking of frogs.

At this beautiful spot, there's a bench of a different kind, where you can sit facing each other and enjoy the view in the same direction. An angle between the bench's legs makes this possible.

It is a memorial to an unpunished murder that occurred deep in the forest around 285 years ago. A large wooden cross stands on the base of the so-called Tirolerstein, located in the heart of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and directly on the border between the Birkenfeld and Trier-Saarburg districts. A seating area in front of it invites you to take a break in the greenery. Since the former chapel in the nearby Neuhütten district of Muhl was converted into the National Park Church a few years ago, and since then, star hikes have been held there, the Tirolerstein has also been a place where believers occasionally hold services.

We planned to refill our water supplies here for our overnight stay at the "Keltenlager" trekking site on May 1, 2025. Unfortunately, the spring had dried up, and we had to walk to the dam further downstream for water. Here, we found a bubbling spring just above the trail.
