Wittekindsburg is one of the most important historical sites in the Wiehen Hills and is situated high atop Wittekindsberg near Porta Westfalica. From here, there is a sweeping view over the Weser Gorge and the surrounding countryside – a strategically advantageous location that was used by people from early times. Wittekindsburg is an early medieval fortification, though its origins reach back to prehistoric and early historic times. The site owes its name to the Saxon Duke Widukind (Wittekind), who became known in the 8th century as an adversary of Charlemagne. Whether Widukind himself ever resided here is not historically certain, but the legends surrounding him are closely linked to this place. The impressive remains of the ramparts and ditches, still visible in the landscape today, testify to the fortification's former importance as a place of protection and refuge. Today, Wittekindsburg is a popular destination for hikers, history buffs, and nature lovers. The site is situated amidst ancient beech forests and is accessible via well-maintained paths. Information panels on site provide insights into the history and archaeological findings surrounding the castle complex. Other important sites, such as the Margarethenklus and the Kreuzkirche (Church of the Cross), are located nearby, further emphasizing the historical character of Wittekindsberg.

The entrance to Bückeburg Castle is a real highlight for me, even before you even see the castle properly. The semicircular arrangement of the cavalier houses and the baroque gate alone make a real impression – you know right away that you're not just entering anywhere, but entering a special place. I particularly like the stone bridge over the old moat. Not only does it look good, but it also fits perfectly into the overall picture. You can tell that great importance was placed on representation here in the past. What I also find impressive is the mix of Renaissance and Baroque elements in the architecture, demonstrating how old and steeped in history the whole thing is. For me, the entrance isn't just an entrance, but the perfect introduction to a visit to the castle – stylish, powerful, and full of character.

Bückeburg Castle is the magnificent residential palace of the Princes of Schaumburg-Lippe and is one of the most important Weser Renaissance buildings in the Weser Uplands. Located on the southwestern edge of Bückeburg's old town, it is an impressive testament to courtly culture with over 700 years of history. The castle was originally built as a moated castle in the 14th century and has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. Particularly striking are its Renaissance facades, magnificent gables, and extensive castle grounds with ancient trees and Baroque design elements. A notable highlight of the castle is the Princely Riding School, one of the last remaining active riding styles of its kind in Europe. Here, historical riding styles such as Baroque equestrian art are cultivated and regularly demonstrated in public performances – an extraordinary experience for visitors. Guided tours also include visits to the princely staterooms, the castle chapel with its impressive interior, and other historic rooms. The castle park invites you to stroll and linger, especially in spring and summer, when flowerbeds and mature trees are in full bloom. There's also a café where you can enjoy a short break with a view of the castle – ideal for cyclists heading to Bückeburg as a stopover along regional routes. Thanks to its central location and easy accessibility, Bückeburg Castle is a worthwhile stop for culture vultures and cyclists alike. It impressively combines history, architecture, and vibrant tradition and is undoubtedly one of Schaumburg's most outstanding highlights.

The Rote Brink takes its name from an intensely reddish-brown coloured layer of sandy marl in the otherwise predominant limestone.
