The Unterbacher See can be found in Düsseldorf's southeastern district of Unterbach. In local parlance, the lake is also called Baggerloch, which is due to the fact that it is a former quarry lake. Gravel and sand were extracted between 1926 and 1973. During the Second World War, the German Air Force built a fake airport here to deceive the Allied bombers. The lake is beautifully situated in the wooded nature reserve "Unterbacher See/Eller Forst". Since the water has no tributaries, it is only fed by groundwater. The management of the lake is the responsibility of the Unterbacher See recreation area association. The water quality is regularly tested and classified as excellent.
