The Rödesund Bridge, spanning the Göta Canal at Karlsborg, is one of the most iconic crossings along the waterway. Built in 1931, it replaced earlier wooden bridges and provided a stronger, more reliable connection between the shores of Lake Vättern and the town. Designed as a bascule bridge, it lifts to allow boats and sailing vessels to pass, creating a unique meeting point between road traffic and canal life. With its elegant structure and scenic setting, the bridge is not only a piece of functional infrastructure but also a symbol of the canal’s living heritage. Today, watching it open for passing boats remains a charming spectacle for both travelers and locals.

The first lighthouse on the headland Vanäs was built in 1864 on the northern part of Paviljongudden in Karlsborg. The fire was served by the bridge guard for the bridge over the Göta Canal at Rödesund. He was responsible for the seafaring between Göta Canal's departure in Vättern at Motala and Karlsborg and the two-year ore transport between the zinc mine in northern Vättern and Gothenburg. The lighthouse consisted of a square, tapered wooden tower standing on a square wooden pedestal a good two meters high. As traffic increased in the south of the Vättern, the lighthouse was depleted. In 1892, the current lighthouse was built, which could be seen from all directions when ships were sailing towards the mouth of the Göta Canal. The white, octagonal, conical wooden tower stands in front of the shore on an artificial island in front of Vanäs udde. A 6th order (300 mm) belt lens was installed (3 times a 90 ° and 1 screened 90 °). The light source was a kerosene lamp with Lindberg rotator. The light intensity was 40 candela. In 1901, the lighthouse was taken over by the pilotage system. In 1921, the kerosene lamp and rotator were replaced with an AGA light with KMEA-130 air conditioning unit and sun valve. The light intensity was thereby increased to 200 candela. It was only in 1977 that the lighthouse was electrified with 2x40W 10.3V lamps, land cables, batteries and photocells. The tower has been a state monument since 1978. The lighthouse stands in Karlsborg on Lake Vättern, north of the fortress on the peninsula Vanäs udde, about 300 meters northeast of Vanäsverkan.
