Trollhättan was founded on the Göta Älv river at the foot of the mighty Trollhättan Waterfalls. The area around the waterfall, with its crown bridge and locks, offers exciting experiences for young and old. During the summer months, the gates are opened at specific times, and the water thunders down the valley.

When the dam gates in the Göta älv river are opened, up to 300,000 liters of water per second shoot down the 30 meter high rocks. This happens at certain times during the summer months and several times a day during the big city festival in mid-July. The festival is called Fallens Dagar ("the days of the waterfall") and is Sweden's oldest city festival. At all other times it is better to send the precious water through the turbines and produce electricity with it.
